<p><a name="index-_0040code_007berr_007d-directive-322"></a>If <span class="command">as</span> assembles a <code>.err</code> directive, it will print an error
message and, unless the <span class="option">-Z</span> option was used, it will not generate an
object file. This can be used to signal an error in conditionally compiled code.
