<span class="command">as</span> is assembling into. Thus, the expression <span class="samp">melvin:

.long .</span> defines <code>melvin</code> to contain its own address.
|
|
Assigning a value to <code>.</code> is treated the same as a <code>.org</code>
|
|
directive. Thus, the expression <span class="samp">.=.+4</span> is the same as saying
|
|
<span class="samp">.space 4</span>.
